About the Firm:
The Michael Walker Law Office is one of Ontario’s leading firms specializing in transportation law and has been advising hundreds of companies on both sides of the border since it was formed in 1996. We help reconcile our clients’ private sector objectives with the government’s public policy goals, which simply means helping to maximize profits by “cutting red tape”. We make sure our clients are in compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements so that they can, in turn, continue to respond to the needs of their customers in this jurisdiction. We also work with a network of experienced and licensed paralegals to ensure our clients’ interests are protected in the Provincial Courts across Ontario as economically and effectively as possible. The Michael Walker Law Office understands the financial realities of the trucking industry and we work hard to reduce costs so we can continue to provide lower cost, value-added expertise for our clients. It has been a successful business strategy.
That being said, the firm believes in “giving back” and actively supports a number of charitable organizations. In the past few years the firm has supported StepStones for Youth, a registered charity serving youth in and from the child welfare system (foster care). They provide award-winning programming for this high-risk population that improve school engagement, high school graduation, and post-secondary enrollment; long-term, stable housing; and mental and physical health, leading to reduced homelessness, isolation, dependency on social services, and perpetual poverty. About Michael:
Michael was called to the Bar in 1985 after graduating from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law and articling at one of Canada’s leading corporate law firms. He had previously been the youngest Correctional Officer and the youngest Probation & Parole Officer in the history of the province so the understandable expectation was that he would practice Criminal Law. But Michael was more intrigued by the issues arising from the regulation of business by governmental agencies and tribunals. Married with his first child on the way, he accepted an offer to join the legal department of the Ontario Trucking Association where he spent a year representing members at licensing hearings before the Ontario Highway Transport Board. He was then recruited to join Canada’s leading transportation law firm where he eventually became a partner. Michael’s practice was very successful, largely due to his long-term membership in the Transportation Lawyers Association and the constant stream of referrals he received from his colleagues in that organization. In 1996 Michael left to form his own firm… with substantially lower overhead costs. Michael now represents more than 375 transportation companies on both sides of the border. That is a good thing because Michael is now a single father of four kids - and university is very expensive! As most of Michael’s clients will know, he loves to travel having visited Vietnam, Cuba, Costa Rica, Mexico, India, and the United Arab Emirates in recent years. This is in addition to his annual golf trips to less exotic locales such as Ireland, Oregon, Colorado and British Columbia. Rest assured however, that Michael always has his iPhone and iPad at hand and is never out of touch if his clients need his assistance or advice.
