The great majority of our clients and their drivers are committed to safety and often work with us to develop proactive preventative safety programs. That being said, even the most careful carriers occasionally receive tickets for various offences and are obliged to appear in Provincial Courts throughout Ontario. Depending on the nature of the charge, these offences can carry maximum fines of as much as $20,000.00. Perhaps just as importantly, convictions can also result in demerit points being assessed against a carrier’s Commercial Vehicle Operators Record (“CVOR”). A carrier is only allowed to accumulate a certain number of CVOR demerit points before attracting the attention of the Ministry of Transportation’s Deputy Registrar and the Carrier Sanctions Office. That can lead to a show-cause hearing and maybe the suspension or even the cancellation of a carrier’s operating privileges in Ontario.
If you receive a Summons or a Provincial Offence Notice from Ontario- or any correspondence regarding your CVOR- please don’t hesitate to contact us.
